A nice day out of face-painting and bigotry

was billed as the Red, White and Blue Festival, the annual rally of the British National Party, but the reality was more akin to any rotary club fundraiser on a sunny August weekend.

It was billed as the Red, White and Blue Festival, the annual rally of the British National Party, but the reality was more akin to any rotary club fundraiser on a sunny August weekend.

There was face painting for the kids, a bouncy castle, the raffle, rock with the party's name running through and even a stall extolling places of interest to visit in Lancashire. It all added to the summer fair atmosphere. Certainly, this was no place for the classic far right stereotypes of skinheads, swastikas and nazi salutes.

We live in the age of makeovers with gardens, houses, and people transformed by a battery of experts before our very eyes most nights on television. No more thorough a job though has been done than with the BNP. It is clearly marketing itself as a party working-class people can relate to. Providing they are white, of course.

There were memories of the bad old days, though these didn't survive beyond the gate leading onto the festival site near the village of Sawley, in the picturesque Ribble Valley. In lay-bys along the A59 approaching the site police Transit vans were parked waiting for any violence. And across the festival entrance a small huddle of protesters from the Anti-Nazi League staged a protest.

"BNP is a Nazi party, smash the BNP," they yelled, but elicited no response. Trapped in a time warp they appear to have failed to realise that their political opponents have moved on and swearing abuse at cars containing children is not pleasant, whatever the views of their parents.
On the site itself a large marquee set up for political oratory was largely empty, as activists preferred to sunbathe outside. Political speeches had been delayed due to the weather. The party's leader Nick Griffin struck an at-one-with-the-people pose working on a stall offering samples of local cheese and then later fetching buckets of water for the face painting.

"Everyone is happy, the sun is shining and it is too much on a beautiful day to sit listening to speeches in a stifling tent," he explained. "This is the third year of the festival and originally it was a morale booster for members and activists. Now it is a valuable showcase. The image portrayed is at variance with what people expect."

In fact, the overall feeling is that it is all rather dull. People greet old friends and catch up on gossip. One older member deplores the volume of the music and bemoans the decline of classical music. An impromptu game of football is organised.

The handling of the media is cordial. Where once there would have been confrontation, stewards now go out of their way to be friendly. A £50 charge for each media organisation is quickly waived. Only Mark Treacy, a candidate in the Oldham local elections and, thanks to his criminal past, on the receiving end of media vitriol, has not bought into the new real politick.

However clever the packaging, though, the views remain the same. At one stall has bulk supplies of cards comparing immigrants to the grey squirrel that has ousted the native red squirrel, and another claims there is no mandate for turning Britain into a multiracial society.

One activist describes the two-day event as an "oasis of monoculture". Surveying children playing he adds: "Some of these kids will in their lifetimes be living in a society where whites are in a minority. Muslims reproduce at 10 times the rate we do. Why should we volunteer for our own extinction?"

Dr Phil Edwards, who sits on the party's policy committee, was a member of the Conservative Party until seven years ago. "The Tories are cowards. Many of them agree with us, but they just haven't got the bottle to come out and say anything." Like many he parrots the line that he is not racist. Rather, he describes himself as "race realist".

However, this wasn't a day for deep political discussion and he quickly settled for a tour of the festival site and a repeat of the message that the BNP are just ordinary people. The sheer ordinariness of the festival is clearly one of its major selling points for the party.

Simon Darby, the event co-ordinator, believes more than a thousand people will visit the festival over the weekend and says the location was not selected out of provocation because of the party's recent local elections success in nearby Burnley, but was seen as a thank you to the party's supporters in the region. Such has been the support for the event that he believes there is now a ready-made branch in the nearby town Clitheroe.

In the distance a Tannoy could be heard. At thought I first it could be the police and the far left. It turned out to be a vintage car rally being held further up the road. It was probably a lot more fun than being at the BNP festival and those who attended were no doubt dedicated. But there is little doubt that it was at the BNP festival that the real fanatics could be found.

How to Set Up for Face Painting

Face painting is a delightful way to bring smiles to children's and even adults' faces. Using watercolor paints, you can create colorful decorations and patterns on a person's face. All it takes is a bit of patience, a steady hand and the desire to have some fun.

It's important to use watercolor paints specifically designed for face painting. Do not use watercolor markers or acrylic paints, as these are hard to remove and can irritate the skin.

Things You’ll Need:
Assorted watercolor brushes
Face Paint watercolor paints or paint palette
Damp sponge
Jar of water
Paper towels
Large bottle of water
Face paint glitter (optional)
Petroleum jelly (optional)
Hand sanitizer (optional)

Face Painting is Easy and Fun and Do

Step1 Decide what you want to paint, whether it be butterflies, smiles or hearts. It's important to choose what you are going to do, based on your painting abilities and the amount of time you want to spend on each person's face. If you expect to be doing lots of faces, keep your designs simple and easy to paint, so you can paint quickly. Young children get restless easily, so simple fast designs make it easier for them and you.

Step2 Make up a large chart of these designs. This gives you something to show people so they can choose the design they want you to paint. Use larger paper or poster board so people can really see what choices they have.

Step3 Arrange your face paints and brushes. Have a good assortment of watercolor paint brushes, from fine tip to broad tip, so you can easily create your designs. Have two watercolor palettes trays--one to use and the other as a back up in case you run out of a certain color. Always use watercolors specifically designed for face painting.

Step4 Prepare your tools. Keep a large jar of water in which to rinse your brushes regularly. Depending on how many faces you do, plan to change this water frequently so it rinses effectively. Have a damp sponge to erase mistakes, and rinse this frequently to keep it free of paint build-up. Keep a roll of paper towels handy for spills, to dry your brushes and as another way to erase mistakes.

Step5 Practice your designs a few times. Get comfortable with each so you know what brushes and colors you use for each one. This will save you time and indicate if you may need extra amounts of a particular color.

Step6 Practice on fake skin. While this may sound weird, practice on a smooth rubber ball or a balloon, which is very like the texture of skin. Skin tends to "drag" on the brushes as you paint, causing the the brush to "stutter" or spatter paint, which can ruin your design and force you to sponge it off and start again. This practice will help you determine the right paint and water blend for your brushes.

Step7 Garnish your design. For extra pizazz, mix a dab of petroleum jelly and glitter to add sparkle to you work with a brush dedicated just for this. Do not use this near the eyes, as the jelly can "creep" into the eyes via heat or perspiration. Do not use metallic craft glitter. Use only glitters specifically designed for face painting.

How to Host a Super Bowl Party for Kids

Super Bowl is another time when you see children get excited about an upcoming game because of their parents. While most Super Bowl parties are geared toward adults with beer and buffalo wings, kids can indulge in a child-friendly Super Bowl party also. With some games and face paint, this Super Bowl party can score points with kids.
Step1 Send out the invites to some of your children's friends. Because this party is taking place in the evening, you may only want to select a handful of children to attend the Super Bowl party. Invite the parents as well, or you may opt to watch the children while the parents go their adult Super Bowl parties.
Step2 Tell the children to dress up in their favorite football jerseys. Decide if you want to paint faces during the Super Bowl Party for the kids to enjoy. You may need to ask permission from the parents if you plan on doing this in case any of the children are allergic to the face paint.
Step3 Buy some munchies for the party. Think about some great treats that the children could enjoy that would be fun and healthy.
Step4 Set up a few fun and simple games at your Super Bowl party for the kids. Setting up a table football game on the kitchen table might be a fun way for the children to socialize during the Super Bowl party for kids.
Step5 Encourage the children to actually watch the Super Bowl. While many of the kids may not show any interest, it may be a good time to educate the kids about some of the players' positions or give them a quick geography lesson about where the event is taking place. Make the game exciting by allowing the children to be cheerleaders on the side.

Add Glitter to a Face Painting Design

There are several stages to face painting. A final stage involves bringing your creation to life. This is done through adding glitter and shine to the face painting once it is completed to add dimension and pizzaz to your art. Here are the steps to adding glitter to face painting.

Instructions

Step1 Paint an object or creature on someone's face. Complete the painting adding whatever finishing touches you will need.

Step2 Prepare the glitter bottle. Buy glitter already in a small plastic bottle that is easy to squeeze. Alternately, buy a travel size shampoo bottle from your local drug store or super center. Choose a bottle with a twist up top like a school glue bottle. Add the glitter to the clean dry bottle with a funnel. Close the lid and set aside.

Step3 Close eyes. The person getting painted should close their eyes and keep them shut while you apply the glitter. Tell him that you will tell him when to open his eyes.

Step4 Hold the glitter bottle pointed at a down angle and squeeze the bottle shooting glitter onto the recipient's face. Start with short quick squeezes. Check to see if enough glitter is on the painting. If you need more glitter, squeeze a second time.
Tips & Warnings
Choose a light pearilized color glitter to show up better on darker paintings.
Have a second bottle standing by filled with clean water. Spray out the eyes if glitter gets into them.

You can find free printable face painting pictures on some really great sites. From simple designs such as flowers and cherries, to elaborate and beautiful fairy, princess and superhero designs, children love each design.

When using paints and other decorative things on the face, you want to make sure that it's all safe. You don't want to use regular acrylic paints like some do, because they can actually irritate a child's sensitive skin. Instead, go for a paint that is made specifically to go on the skin. This will keep the child a happy camper.

When using glitter to add to the effect of face paints, make sure you never use aluminum glitter. This can be extremely unsafe for the child’s skin and eyes, and it's rather easy for a child to rub some of the aluminum glitter into his or her eye. Avoid this by using glitters that are safe for the skin, such as body glitter.

There are many free printable face painting pictures that you can add glitter to and it will make the design stand out and be much prettier. The same thing goes for stick on jewels. Make sure that there is nothing in the glue or jewel that could irritant the skin.

A great idea is to learn how to face paint for your child's birthday party. Professionals will charge up to $150 an hour to do this for you. You truly can save a ton of money by doing it yourself. If you don't know what to paint look for free printable face painting pictures. Face painting really makes a birthday party special, and the designs that you paint will be priceless to the child.
